1. Get up and be active
It is understandable you are sad and hurt, possibly crying, and if you are like me have burrowed deep into your bed with your blankets over your head hiding from the world. The last thing you want to do is leave that comforting place and go exercise.
Exercise is taking care of your body and in a low moment showing your body that you care about it will greatly improve your mood. The physical movement from exercising will help move the negative energy on the inside and replace with a cleaner energy. When you exercise your body releases endorphins which improve your mood and mental state. Exercise can help get your mind off of the negative thoughts.
You do not necessarily have to go out and do a difficult exercise routine. You can simply try physical activity. Physical activity can be as easy as going out for a walk. As long as it requires muscle and energy it is beneficial to your body. If you are consistent with staying active you will begin to feel much better.
2. Call a friend or a family member
Sitting alone and being sad always makes the situation worse. Overthinking occurs and it leads to an anxious mind. Reach out and give someone you are close to a call. Talking about what is bothering you helps you to process the information. Receiving advice or input from an outside source helps you to see the situation in a different light.
Knowing that you are not alone is important in difficult times. What you are going through could be similar to what others have experienced and they can offer advice based on their personal experiences. If you feel that you have nobody to talk to you can try calling CONTACT Helpline. This is an emotional listening support helpline. It is all volunteers and they will not offer advice but, it does give you someone to talk to.
3.Listen to uplifting music
One of the worst things you can do when you are feeling down is to listen to sad/depressing music. Doing so will just further put you in worse mood. It brings down your energy and traps you in the sad emotions.
Find music that is upbeat and happy. The lyrics should be uplifting or have happy stories. While it may seem fake to listen to music opposite of how you feel it can change the way you are feeling. Rather than dragging yourself down with sad music convince your mind to get a happy mindset by listening to happy music.
Studies have shown that listening to happy music brings positive memories quickly. This means that by listening to songs with positivity will actually make you happy and help you not feel so sad. Remember, you deserve to be happy.
4. Use the power of your smile
It sounds too simple right? You can trick your brain into being happy by raising the corners of your mouth. Your brain can't determine the difference between a real smile and a fake smile. Real or fake that smile will release endorphins that make you feel happier. If you often releases those chemicals in your body you will feel relaxed and happy.
Find ways to make yourself smile. Watch funny shows or listen to comedy. Spend time around people that make you laugh and smile. Or you can just fake it and put on a smile but, the real thing feels so much better.
5. Try something new
Sometimes to get out of a rut you have to switch up your life. Trying new things can be exciting and give you something to look forward to. Sign up for a community class, buy some paint and give it a whirl, or try cooking a new meal. There are so many options that you have. Go for it and attempt a new activity you have never done before. Maybe it will be something you have wanted to try for a long time or, it can be something you thought of spur of the moment.
Learning helps your well-being. It can boost your self confidence and bring joy to your life. You never know what people you will meet by trying new things or the experiences you will have until you go and attempt them. Maybe you find out that pottery is not your niche but, now you have that experience and have given yourself an opportunity to learn.
Key take away
You deserve to be happy and to improve. Your feelings are valid and should be expressed. It is okay to not be okay but, you should not stay in that state for too long or, it will become damaging. Choose to be happy and try these tips to find your happiness.
